Toronto, ON (November 30, 2018) – Dennis Darby, President and CEO of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) released the following statement today with regards to the signature of the new NAFTA:
“CME congratulates the Canadian, American and Mexican governments for signing the new NAFTA today. The signing of this agreement is a significant step for Canadian industry that will encourage growth and prosperity in North American markets and paves the way for a renewed relationship with the United States and Mexico. We applaud the efforts of the Canadian negotiating team who worked tirelessly to secure this deal and preserve integrated manufacturing supply chains. We encourage all parties to ratify and implement the new NAFTA as soon as possible so manufacturers can start taking advantage of the important advances secured in the agreement. Now that a deal is signed, CME stresses the importance of resolving the steel and aluminum tariffs issue and putting an end to the unfair and illegal barriers to trade which go against the spirit of the agreement and are detrimental to industry.”
The manufacturing sector is the cornerstone of the North American economic relationship. CME worked closely with the government throughout the negotiation to ensure the integrated manufacturing sector would remain unharmed and strengthened where possible. With 10 out 11 CME recommendation adopted, CME believes the USMCA has accomplished this objective.
