VMAC’s story begins humbly, when two mechanical engineers, Jim Hogan and Tony Menard, began building jet engines for the Canadian Department of National Defense in 1986. Unfortunately, this exciting endeavor was short-lived, as the recession hit, and the contract was lost.

However, Jim and Tony were not discouraged. With a spirit of innovation guiding them, they found a new opportunity—manufacturing mounting brackets for air compressors.

This new contract inspired a new company name—VMAC—and distinct product-development path for the company. By 1997 the company released its flagship product, the innovative UNDERHOOD™ 70 Air Compressor. This state-of-the-art rotary screw UNDERHOOD air compressor was the first ever to be mounted in the engine compartment of a truck. This revolutionary product changed the industry, as it created a new option for on-board air for service vehicles.

Fast forward to 2020—VMAC continues to operate with the innovative spirit of its founders. Even during a global pandemic, VMAC has continued to innovate, manufacture, and export the industry’s most sought-after product releases, to customers around the globe.

Located in Nanaimo, BC, on beautiful Vancouver Island since 1990, VMAC now employs over 130 dedicated coworkers. With strong ties to the local community, VMAC gives back through its corporate sponsorship program, and was recently recognized on the 2020 Best Workplaces™ for Giving list. VMAC is also Great Place To Work Certified™, and has been named a Best Managed Company in Canada.
