Manufacturers applaud measures to reduce business costs

Dennis Darby, President & CEO of Canadian Manufacturers & Exports issued today the following statement:

“CME congratulates the Ontario Government for the proposed steps announced today in the government of Ontario’s Proposed Changes to Create Jobs and Reduce Regulatory Burden. These actions are critical to reducing the cost of doing business, are a necessary step in restoring the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector, and are directly aligned with CMEs Industrie 2030 Ontario strategy. In particular, the announced harmonization of the Toxics Reduction Act will eliminate unnecessary regulations that are duplicative with the federal system, an unnecessary burden on manufacturers that had offered no additional societal protections. Equally critical is the announced elimination of the Highest and Best Use Provisions in property taxes. As land values increase due to residential demands, municipalities had been rezoning to increase residential density and tax rates and, manufacturers were being pushed out of communities they had established their business. This step will enable manufacturers to continue to operate in their traditional areas.  We congratulate the government for moving on its commitment to table a bill to reduce regulatory burdens semi-annually and look forward to continuing to work with the Government on additional red-tape reduction for businesses.”
