Session 1 - Building Inclusive Workplaces: Awareness, Recruitment, and Retention

In this session, AMIK Inc. will share valuable insights into Indigenous cultural awareness, recruitment, and retention strategies tailored for corporate Canada.
They will discuss approaches tested and implemented to improve the employability of Indigenous job seekers, foster inclusive workplaces, and address key Indigenous HR issues. They will also highlight special projects with Indigenous components and explore opportunities for Indigenous procurement.
This session provides practical tools, real-world examples, and strategies to help your organization build stronger, more inclusive relationships with Indigenous communities while enhancing business practices and outcomes.
Speaker: Sherman Kong
Sherman brings over two decades of experience working with the Indigenous community, cultivating a profound understanding and commitment to their needs.
Holding a degree in Economics & Business from the University of Manitoba, Sherman has navigated through roles in prominent Canadian corporations, including RBC, First Nations Bank, and the Business Development Bank of Canada. His extensive experience extends to both private for-profit and non-profit sectors, where he has consistently fostered meaningful connections with the Indigenous community, serving on boards and as a consultant.
Currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer for AMIK Inc., Sherman plays a pivotal role in providing strategic Indigenous Engagement Solutions to esteemed companies such as CN Rail, Air Canada, Payworks, Canada Life, Assiniboine Credit Union, Rio Tinto, and more.
His leadership reflects a profound dedication to bridging the gap between Indigenous communities and corporate entities, fostering collaboration and understanding for mutually beneficial outcomes.
Session 2: Creating ‘the Nest’: Incorporating Indigenous HR Practices and Policies in the Workplace
Learning Outcomes
This session will explore the organizational benefits of implementing Indigenous HR practices, focusing on fostering diversity, equity, and employee engagement. Participants will learn how these practices align with reconciliation goals and create a more inclusive workplace culture, with practical strategies for incorporating Indigenous values into organizational policies.
Attendees will also gain strategies to better support Indigenous applicants in the recruitment process, ensuring cultural sensitivity and reducing barriers to entry. The session will highlight opportunities to integrate Indigenous practices across the workplace, from mentorship programs to policy development, drawing on Danielle Carriere’s expertise in Indigenous community engagement and policy implementation.
Speaker: Danielle Carriere
Danielle is a Métis professional with over 10 years of experience in the government sector, specializing in policy implementation and Indigenous community engagement. As a contractor with Spirited Ways Consulting, she provides clients with advice and guidance on matters of Indigenous inclusion. She assists in the development of plans or strategies to action the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
Danielle has several years of board and volunteer experience with organizations such as the United Way of Winnipeg, the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, and Ka Ni Kanichihk. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, crafting, and running.
