Inspiring Women in Manufacturing: A Conversation with Abigail Clubb
The face of manufacturing is changing and women like Abigail Clubb are leading the way. As an Apprentice Machine Tool Builder and Integrator at Samuel Automation, Abigail is gaining hands-on experience, challenging outdated norms, and inspiring the next generation of women in skilled trades.
Pursuing a Career in Manufacturing
Abigail’s interest in manufacturing began early. “I’ve always loved working with my hands — figuring out how things work and are put together.” After completing four years of manufacturing classes in high school, she entered an apprenticeship program and hasn’t looked back. “The idea of building machines that help make everyday products really appealed to me.”
Learning Through Technology and Change
The evolution of the industry is something Abigail sees daily, and she believes innovation is a key driver in manufacturing. “Technology is everything. Automation and robotics are all around us, and the programming side of things is just insane now.” With each new system or tool, she’s even more eager to learn. “The programming involved today is much different compared to when I started out in the industry. Every day is a chance to pick up something new from the experienced builders I work with.”
Overcoming Challenges and Building Confidence
A significant milestone in Abigail’s journey was contributing to the assembly of a custom machine for a nuclear reactor — a complex and high-stakes project that reinforced her confidence and determination. “It was intimidating at first, but with guidance and determination, I pushed through.” Like many new professionals, Abigail has faced moments of self-doubt, but perseverance and support helped her build trust in her capabilities. “It taught me that even when I feel unsure, I can succeed. I learned to trust my abilities and that helped me grow.”
Advice for Aspiring Women
To young women curious about careers in manufacturing, Abigail’s message is clear: “Go for it. Don’t let stereotypes or doubt hold you back.” She emphasizes the value of mentorship and continuous learning. “Find mentors who support you, keep learning, and you can absolutely thrive here. As cheesy as it sounds, it’s really about being yourself and bringing your perspective to the table.”
Looking Ahead
Abigail is excited about what’s next for the industry. “Machines are getting smarter, processes are getting more efficient, and we’re applying what we learn from one project to the next.” For her, it’s an exciting time to be in manufacturing, with innovation and collaboration driving progress.
A Sister’s Influence
When asked who inspired her, Abigail credits her sister. “She introduced me to manufacturing in high school, and her passion made me want to dive in. Her love and passion for it inspired me to take the leap.”
Building a More Inclusive Industry
Abigail’s story is a powerful reminder that the manufacturing world is open to those with curiosity, commitment, and courage and that women belong in manufacturing, not just as participants, but as leaders and innovators. As more women enter the field, they bring unique perspectives that drive innovation and strengthen the industry.
