Paving the Path: A Conversation with Hajra Shafiq
As the manufacturing industry evolves through technological advancement and a growing emphasis on diversity, women like Hajra Shafiq are stepping into leadership roles and reshaping what’s possible. As a Project Manager at Samuel Automation, Hajra combines engineering expertise with people-first leadership to bring complex projects to life.
Inspired by Curiosity and Innovation
Hajra’s path into manufacturing was sparked by a natural curiosity: “I’ve always wanted to understand how things work.” Her co-op placements during her engineering degree introduced her to the automotive industry and, ultimately, manufacturing. The dynamic, hands-on nature of the field captured her interest and set the stage for her career.
Adapting to a Fast-Changing Industry
Since entering the field, Hajra has witnessed big shifts in priorities and practices. “There’s a growing push to be faster, cheaper, more consistent—and safer.” This shift has accelerated the adoption of automation, especially in ergonomics and efficiency. For Hajra, this progress is matched by another positive trend: “More women are stepping into leadership roles, and that gives me hope.”
From Concept to Completion
At Samuel Automation, Hajra finds satisfaction in guiding projects from the earliest idea to a completed machine. “Being involved in every stage, and watching a concept turn into something real that solves a problem—that’s incredibly rewarding.” One recent project stands out when asked about how she handles challenges. “I’m working on a system for the healthcare industry, which is a whole new world for me.” With complex assemblies and high standards, it required more time upfront for concepting and testing. “I’m proud of how the team has collaborated and communicated to tackle the challenges we faced.”
Team-Driven Leadership
For Hajra, leadership is about being a part of the team. “I see leadership as encouraging accountability, supporting each other, and making sure everyone’s input contributes to success.” In technical fields like automation, clear communication and trust are critical components of the job.
A Bright Future for Automation
Looking ahead, Hajra is excited about the role of technology in manufacturing. “Automation is driving greater consistency and flexibility. It’s helping us meet increasing demand while continuing to innovate.”
Advice to the Next Generation
To young women considering a career in automation, Hajra offers this advice: “Believe there’s nothing you can’t do. Equip yourself with the right skills, education, and mentorship. Your potential to succeed is limitless, and you can challenge the world’s perceptions.”
Inspired by Family, Driven by Growth
Hajra names her mother as her greatest influence: “She’s brilliant and kind, and she’s given me every opportunity to thrive.” Outside of work, Hajra finds balance through paddleboarding and has recently taken up piano. “It’s a reminder that it’s never too late to learn something new.”
Breaking Boundaries and Building Futures
Hajra’s story reflects the exciting changes taking place in manufacturing: more women in leadership, more innovation through technology, and more inclusive spaces for diverse talent to grow. Her experiences demonstrate that with determination, curiosity, and support, women can lead transformative work in any industry.
