RESEARCH REPORT: The State of Advanced Manufacturing in NL

In 2021, CME NL worked closely with NGen (Next Generation Manufacturing Canada) to develop an applied research initiative to find new ways for CME NL and others to improve the Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) manufacturing and processing sector with an emphasis on advanced manufacturing (AM) adoption. The study’s goal was to highlight how to help accelerate the growth of AM in the province. Specifically, to improve understanding of the factors that hinder or help advanced manufacturing adoption for NL manufacturers and processors. The project collected qualitative data by interviewing twenty-eight individuals associated with 28 manufacturers and processors of various types and sizes and varying degrees of AM experience.

PAST EVENT - FRIDAY, MAR. 8TH, 2024, 10:30 AM - 12 PM NST

IET’s Green Transition Fund and NGen’s Future Ready Program

Our next AMC NL event will feature two presenters: Bradley Thorne from IET will present on the Provincial Government’s Green Transition Fund, and Christy Michalak from NGen will present on the Future Ready Program and associated employee training grants.

These programs are tailored to help manufacturers transition to environmentally sustainable practices and assist with leadership training and upskilling employees. This is an opportunity to ask the experts and gain valuable insights to propel your business forward.

IET Presents: Green Transition Fund

Join us on March 8th, from 10:30 am to 12 pm NST, for an insightful presentation by Bradley Thorne, Industry, Energy and Technology (IET), where we’ll dive into the Green Transition Fund (GTF) and how it can benefit manufacturers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The GTF offers a variety of benefits for manufacturers, providing non-repayable funding ranging from $75,000 to $3 million for commercial and non-commercial projects. This financial assistance is designed to de-risk adopting green technologies and practices, making it an attractive proposition for businesses aiming to reduce their environmental footprint and enhance operational efficiencies. The fund covers a broad spectrum of activities, from research and development of green technologies to implementing energy-efficient processes and developing green economy supply chains.

Eligible manufacturers in Newfoundland and Labrador can leverage the GTF to cover up to 40% of eligible commercial project costs. This support extends to a variety of activities, including the acquisition of specialized technology, market development for green economy products, and the hiring of specialized labour with expertise in green transitions.

NGen Presents: Future Ready Program

NGen’s Future Ready program provides access to federal grants for employee training, as well as leadership training modules, including:

  • NGen’s acclaimed Transformation Leadership Program (TLP) is valued at $7,500 (fully online and at no cost), which you can complete at your own pace — accessible until December 31, 2024.
  • After completing a one-hour TLP module on Workforce 4.0 and a self-assessment, manufacturers will qualify to receive employee training grants that can cover 80% of the cost of training (of your choice), up to $8,000 per company (registration/training submission deadline: March 31st, 2024).

You choose what training your employees need. Some examples include:

  • Machine Monitoring and Maintenance Scheduling
  • Introduction to Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • Data Analysis
  • Applied Project Management
  • Advanced Manufacturing Technician
  • Lean Manufacturing
  • Mechatronics & Industrial Automation Technician
