CME congratulates Canadian and EU governments for CETA provisional application

Toronto, September 21, 2017

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) congratulate the Canadian and European Union (EU) governments for the provisional application of the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) beginning today. We commend the Canadian government for standing up for manufacturers and successfully ratifying an agreement that will be instrumental in allowing Canada to reach its goal of doubling Canadian manufacturing output and value-added exports within 15 years as outlined in CME’s Industrie 2030 Action Plan.

The CETA provides access for Canadian manufacturers to one of the largest and wealthiest markets in the world for Canadian manufactured products. And, the CETA is the most progressive trade agreement ever negotiated by both the EU and Canada. It creates a template for all future trade agreements, including the NAFTA re-negotiations, that support meaningful market access through the elimination of both tariff and non-tariff barriers, including procurement, labour mobility and regulatory cooperation.

CME is committed to working with industry and the government to ensure that Canadian manufacturers can take advantage of this historic opportunity and strive on the European markets.
