CME SVP Mathew Wilson testifies at CIIT on a possible FTA with the Pacific Alliance

Ottawa, February 8, 2018

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters’ Senior Vice President of Policy and Government Relations, Mathew Wilson, appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade in the context of their study on a possible Canada – Pacific Alliance trade agreement.

Wilson identified three objectives trade agreement must meet to benefit manufacturers:

  • It creates a fair and level playing field for Canadian manufacturers and exporters and ensures that they have an equal opportunity to export to foreign markets as our competitors have to import into Canada;
  • It increases the amount of value added exports from Canada, not just the export of natural resources; and
  • It does not undermine the existing integrated manufacturing supply chains developed through previous FTA’s, especially the NAFTA

Wilson also mentioned that an agreement with the Pacific Alliance would modernize existing trade agreements and could be beneficial for Canada, But, new supports must be put in place to help Canadian companies find new markets and customers in the region.
